OpenAI has acquired Glass Imaging, a startup focused on AI-powered smartphone camera technology, in a deal valued at more than $300 million, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The acquisition adds technology intended to deliver DSLR-quality images from smartphone cameras to OpenAI’s portfolio.
Glass Imaging and Its Smartphone Camera Technology
Glass Imaging was founded in 2019 by former Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop. Both are credited with creating the technology behind the iPhone’s Portrait Mode.
The company develops GlassAI, its proprietary imaging system. At the center of that system is a Neural ISP designed to correct lens aberrations and sensor imperfections in compact smartphone cameras. Its purpose is to pull higher image quality from the hardware without relying on generative AI to create visual details that were not present in the original scene.
Glass Imaging is based in Los Altos, California. Its technology has been deployed in Honor smartphones, and the company has demonstrated real-time video enhancement capabilities.
Glass Imaging Funding and Valuation
Before the acquisition, Glass Imaging had raised about $31.5 million through several funding rounds.
Its most recent round was a $20 million Series A completed in May 2025. Insight Partners led the round, with participation from GV, Future Ventures, and Abstract Ventures.
Glass Imaging was valued at approximately $100 million in that funding round. With the reported acquisition value exceeding $300 million, the deal represents roughly a 10x return on the company’s total fundraising.
OpenAI’s Recent Acquisition Activity
The Glass Imaging deal is part of a broader run of acquisitions by OpenAI. Since 2023, the company has completed at least 17 confirmed acquisitions.
Its largest reported deal was the roughly $6.5 billion acquisition of io. OpenAI also purchased Statsig for $1.1 billion and recently acquired TBPN, an internet talk show, as well as an open-source developer tools startup.
OpenAI has not disclosed specific plans for Glass Imaging’s technology.
OpenAI’s Potential IPO Plans
OpenAI’s recent deal activity comes as the company prepares for a possible public offering. In June 2026, it confidentially filed IPO paperwork with the SEC and was working with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley on a potential listing.
The listing could value OpenAI at as much as $1 trillion. The company was most recently valued at $852 billion in a March 2026 funding round.
OpenAI’s CFO has indicated that the company aims to go public in 2027, although some advisors believe a listing could happen sooner.
