Moonshot AI, the Beijing-based company behind the Kimi large language model, has confidentially filed for an initial public offering in Hong Kong. Reuters reported that the proposed listing could become one of the most closely watched Chinese AI company offerings of the year.
People familiar with the plans told Reuters that Moonshot is seeking to raise $3 billion through the IPO. The company is also pursuing a funding round that values it at $50 billion, up from a $30 billion valuation tied to a round completed only weeks earlier.
Moonshot AI’s Kimi Model and Recent Product Activity
Moonshot launched Kimi K3 on July 16. The company described K3 as a 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight model that matched or exceeded frontier models from Anthropic and OpenAI on several benchmarks.
Demand following the launch temporarily exceeded Moonshot’s infrastructure capacity. The company paused new user registrations during that period.
Moonshot later released K3’s open weights on July 27, expanding access for developers beyond the company’s own API. API demand also increased in the following weeks, with annual recurring revenue moving toward $300 million by June, compared with $200 million two months earlier.
Steps Toward a Hong Kong Listing
Moonshot’s confidential filing follows a series of IPO-related moves. In mid-July, the company circulated a shareholder resolution that sought approval for a Hong Kong listing within six months, according to Bloomberg.
To prepare for the listing, Moonshot has been unwinding its offshore variable-interest-entity structure and moving to an onshore China domicile. The offering timetable remains dependent on regulatory approval, and the final fundraising amount could change with market conditions.
Moonshot AI Valuation Growth
Moonshot’s reported valuation has risen quickly:
- About $4.3 billion at the end of 2025
- $20 billion after a Meituan-led funding round earlier in 2026
- Approximately $30 billion in a round that closed in July
- Up to $50 billion in a further fundraising effort reported in August
The later round was described as Moonshot’s intended final pre-IPO fundraising. If completed at that level, it would represent a sharp increase from the company’s earlier valuations.
Investors and Potential IPO Advisers
Moonshot’s investor group includes Alibaba, Tencent, HongShan, IDG Capital, and Meituan’s venture arm.
Goldman Sachs and CICC have reportedly been in discussions to work on the offering. The company’s listing plans, advisers, valuation, and fundraising target remain subject to change.
Hong Kong’s Technology IPO Market
Moonshot’s planned Hong Kong IPO comes as Chinese technology companies account for much of the recent growth in the city’s fundraising market.
Hong Kong listings had raised $41.2 billion as of mid-August, according to LSEG data cited by Reuters. That total was 142% higher than the year before. The proposed Moonshot offering would arrive during a period of increased activity for Chinese technology listings in Hong Kong.
