TSMC is on pace to hit 180,000 monthly wafer starts on its 3nm process by early in the fourth quarter of 2026, arriving two to three months earlier than the market had expected. Demand from AI and data center customers is what's pulling the schedule forward, and it's pushing the company to expand capacity faster than its earlier plans called for.
How Fast 3nm Volume Has Climbed
The node has been scaling steadily rather than in a single jump. Monthly wafer starts on 3nm sat at roughly 120,000 to 130,000 at the end of 2025, then climbed to nearly 150,000 during the first half of 2026. Getting to 180,000 by early Q4 means adding another 30,000 wafers per month on top of that first-half figure.
The accelerated ramp was first reported by Taiwan's Economic Daily News and detailed in a TrendForce report, which points to orders from NVIDIA, AMD, and Broadcom as the drivers behind the pull-forward.
2nm Is Ramping at the Same Time
TSMC isn't trading one node against the other. The newer 2nm process is scaling aggressively in parallel:
- Monthly wafer starts reached roughly 50,000 to 60,000 in the first half of 2026
- Output could pass 80,000 per month by early in the fourth quarter
- The company is targeting close to 100,000 monthly wafers by the end of the year
Put the two nodes together and combined output across TSMC's two most advanced processes could exceed 260,000 wafers per month by early Q4.
New Fabs and Converted Equipment
Meeting that demand takes more physical capacity, and TSMC has moved on both fronts. The company has announced three additional 3nm fabs, located in Taiwan, Arizona, and Japan. It is also converting some existing 5nm equipment to support 3nm production, which adds capacity without waiting on new construction.
For 2nm, the plan is to ramp five fabs during 2026: two in Hsinchu and three in Kaohsiung. The target for the node's first year is output 45 percent higher than what 3nm managed in its own debut year of 2023. Looking past that, TSMC has projected 2nm capacity will grow at a compound annual rate of 70 percent from 2026 through 2028.
The 1.4nm Fab Is Also Running Early
Construction of TSMC's 1.4nm fab at Central Taiwan Science Park is ahead of schedule. The first building is expected to be finished before April 2027.
Supply chain sources indicate pilot production could start as early as the beginning of the third quarter of 2027. Mass production is anticipated in the second half of 2028.
Who's Buying 2nm Capacity
Apple is expected to be a major 2nm customer through its A20 Pro chip, which goes into the iPhone 18 Pro lineup launching in September. Qualcomm and MediaTek are expected to follow with 2027 flagship mobile chips.
Demand isn't limited to phones. On the data center side, AMD's MI455X GPUs are among the products expected to keep 2nm demand steady.
