Stripe has finalized a deal to buy OpenRouter, an AI gateway startup, according to a Bloomberg report. The price exceeds $7 billion.

OpenRouter helps customers pick different AI models for different tasks. Choices depend on specific needs and budget. The company positions itself as a single access point for multiple systems. That setup aims to limit lock-in to any one provider.

CEO Alex Atallah has called OpenRouter the equivalent of Stripe for AI. The startup claimed 8 million global users and access to more than 400 models.

In May, OpenRouter raised $113 million in a Series B round. The round valued the company at $1.3 billion. Investors included Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet’s CapitalG.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that Stripe and OpenRouter were already in acquisition talks. Bloomberg later stated those discussions produced a deal valued at more than $7 billion.
