PayPal has launched PYUSDx, a developer platform that lets businesses create branded stablecoins backed one-to-one by PayPal USD (PYUSD). PYUSD is PayPal’s dollar-pegged token and is issued by Paxos Trust Company.
Built with stablecoin infrastructure firm M0 and crypto payments company MoonPay, PYUSDx shifts PYUSD beyond its role as a standalone payments token. The platform is designed to provide the reserve foundation for stablecoins created by other companies.
How the PYUSDx Stablecoin Platform Works
Businesses using PYUSDx can set several elements of a custom stablecoin, including:
- Token name
- Token symbol
- Fee structure
- Reward distribution model
- Reserve composition
Each stablecoin created through the platform uses PYUSD as its reserve asset. For every custom token minted, equivalent PYUSD backing is required.
Tokens issued through PYUSDx are separate from PayPal’s native PYUSD stablecoin. MoonPay Digital Assets Limited issues the platform-based tokens, and they cannot be used inside PayPal or Venmo wallets.
Cross-Chain Support and Reserve Reporting
PYUSDx includes cross-chain compatibility and on-chain reserve reporting. The platform is intended to reduce the time required to launch a stablecoin from what has traditionally taken months to a matter of days.
That structure gives companies a way to configure their own token while relying on PYUSD as the underlying reserve layer.
PYUSDx Launch Partners and Token Activity
Three launch partners—Saturn, Concrete, and Cap—have collectively processed more than $100 million in volume through PYUSDx, according to Crypto Briefing.
Saturn’s custom token, USDat, has roughly $65 million in circulation. USDAI and Fairblock are also planning to launch stablecoins through the platform.
PayPal’s Strategy for PYUSD and Stablecoin Infrastructure
The stablecoin market has grown to more than $300 billion in total circulation, with Tether and Circle among the competing issuers. With PYUSDx, PayPal is positioning PYUSD as a reserve layer for tokens created by other businesses rather than competing only for consumer wallet share.
This model ties new token issuance on PYUSDx to demand for PYUSD because each custom stablecoin requires equivalent PYUSD backing.
PayPal has also expanded PYUSD availability to 70 markets worldwide and added support for Ethereum, Solana, and Arbitrum. PYUSDx continues that expansion into stablecoin infrastructure.
PYUSDx and PYUSD Concentration Risk
PYUSDx depends on PYUSD as the reserve asset for every token issued through the platform. As a result, a disruption affecting PYUSD could also affect every stablecoin built on PYUSDx.
