ChatGPT has been available on desktops around the world, yet one group remained left out until now: Linux users. Parts of the open source developer community had asked OpenAI for an official desktop app. This week the company delivered.
OpenAI released a dedicated ChatGPT app for Linux in preview. The company stated that Linux ranked among the most-requested platforms for the desktop app. The launch brings ChatGPT and Codex to every major desktop operating system.
Linux users can now run ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex on supported distributions. The release went out worldwide on Tuesday.
Supported Linux Distributions
The app works with desktop versions of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. Those base systems power a wide range of downstream desktop distributions and flavors. As a result, many of those downstream options should also run the app without issue.
Timing Relative to Claude
OpenAI arrived a little behind Anthropic. Anthropic shipped a Claude desktop app for Linux roughly a month earlier. Claude’s version supports Ubuntu 22.04 or later and Debian 12 or later.
