Crypto Buying Arrives Inside the AI Chat Interface
MoonPay went live inside ChatGPT's App Store on May 22, giving users the ability to purchase cryptocurrency directly within the AI chat interface. The launch marks a first for any crypto onramp on the platform and pushes ChatGPT further into financial services territory.
The integration works through a simple discovery flow. ChatGPT users can search for "MoonPay" in the Apps section, link their account, and buy tokens including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, USDC, and more than 100 other digital assets without leaving the conversation. Payment methods include credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and bank transfer, with transactions supported across over 30 blockchain networks.
In a post on X, the company announced: "MoonPay is now live in ChatGPT's App Store! We are officially the first and only crypto onramp integrated in ChatGPT."
Months of Groundwork at the AI-Crypto Intersection
The ChatGPT debut follows a deliberate push by MoonPay to position itself at the meeting point of artificial intelligence and crypto payments. In February, CEO Ivan Soto-Wright introduced MoonPay Agents, a platform built to give AI agents access to cryptocurrency wallets for autonomous trading, swapping, and transferring of assets.
Alongside that effort, the company released an MCP server — a command-line tool that allows any AI assistant to tap into payments, swaps, and on-chain execution through a single interface. The combination signals a broader bet that AI assistants will increasingly need direct financial rails to act on behalf of users.
How the MoonPay Integration Works in Practice
The flow inside ChatGPT is designed to keep users in the conversation. Rather than redirecting to an external site, the app handles account linking, payment selection, and asset purchase within the chat. Support for major payment methods such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, along with traditional credit cards and bank transfers, lowers the friction for first-time buyers who may already use these payment rails for everyday transactions.
A Closer Look at ChatGPT's App Ecosystem
OpenAI rolled out its ChatGPT App Store in late 2025, opening the door for third-party services such as Spotify, Expedia, and DoorDash to operate inside the conversational interface. Growth across the ecosystem, however, has been uneven.
A Los Angeles Times report from March noted that although more than 300 app integrations were available, adoption has been sluggish. Developers pointed to limited functionality and a shortage of usage data as factors holding back wider use of the platform's apps.
Why MoonPay's Arrival Stands Out
MoonPay's debut is one of the more notable additions to the ecosystem. It extends ChatGPT's reach into financial services, an area where few apps have ventured so far. Whether crypto purchases through a chat interface gain real traction will depend on user demand and on how aggressively OpenAI promotes integrations of this kind inside its platform.
