Free Gemini accounts are beginning to lose the previous model picker. Instead of choosing between Flash, Pro, or other available models directly, users now see a single Auto option that lets Google decide which model handles each request.
Free users can still access Flash and Pro, but only when Gemini’s automatic selection system routes a prompt to one of those models. The change shifts model choice away from the user and into Google’s hands.
How Gemini Auto Model Selection Works
For most everyday prompts, Gemini Auto uses Flash-Lite. When Gemini determines that a request requires more reasoning, it can move the task to Flash or Pro automatically.
The setting comes with a tradeoff. Users who turn off smart model selection will receive responses through Flash-Lite only. In practice, free users must leave automatic selection enabled if they want Gemini to potentially use stronger models.
That means free accounts no longer have a direct way to select a more capable model for a particular prompt. Gemini makes that decision based on the request instead.
Free Gemini Users Can Adjust Effort Levels
Google is also rolling out effort controls across Gemini. The new options are:
- Low: Prioritizes speed
- Medium: Sits between the other two settings
- High: Gives the system more room to work through difficult prompts
These controls replace the earlier Extended option.
Effort settings give users a way to choose how much reasoning they want Gemini to apply. But they do not restore direct model selection. Users can influence the level of effort, while Google largely controls which model performs the work.
What the Change Means for Gemini’s Free Tier
The update creates a split in the controls available to free Gemini users. They can select an effort level, but they cannot directly decide whether Gemini should use Flash, Pro, or another available model.
Automatic selection may route more demanding requests to Flash or Pro. Still, users who want access to those models have to rely on Gemini’s own decision-making. Disabling smart model selection limits responses to Flash-Lite.
Paid Gemini Plans Gain Another Difference
Google has been placing Gemini more deeply across its hardware and software ecosystem. New Pixel phones include AI features, and Googlebook laptops put Gemini at the center of the experience. The company is also bundling paid AI plans with some hardware.
Google has not said that removing direct model selection is intended to push free users toward a subscription. Even so, paid users retain a clearer advantage when free accounts no longer have direct control over model choice.
