Disney plans to give TikTok creators official access to characters, scenes, and other assets from hundreds of its movies and television shows. The agreement will allow creators to make short-form videos using material from Disney brands including Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and FX.

The partnership is expected to start as a pilot program in the United States in the coming months, with expansion to other markets planned afterward. Disney and TikTok have not yet said which creators will receive access first or provided a complete list of the movies, shows, characters, and assets included in the program.

Disney Opens More Franchises to TikTok Creators

Fan edits, memes, reaction videos, theories, and remixes already circulate widely across TikTok. This agreement gives Disney a way to formally authorize some of that activity while making its entertainment catalog available for creator-made short videos.

The catalog is expected to include material from some of Disney’s largest franchises. That means TikTok creators could potentially work with Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, FX, and other Disney-owned properties, though the exact scope of permitted material remains unannounced.

The deal does not amount to an open license for anyone to change Disney properties without limits. Disney has historically protected franchises such as Marvel and Star Wars closely, and the available information does not explain how much creative control users will have over the scenes, characters, and other assets they can access.

Selected TikTok Videos May Appear on Disney+

The arrangement goes beyond publishing licensed Disney-related edits within TikTok. Disney plans to choose certain creator-made videos for distribution through Verts, the vertical-video area in the Disney+ mobile app.

Verts is a swipeable feed built around short scenes and highlights from Disney movies and shows. Users can save titles to their Watchlist or move from a clip directly into the full movie or episode. Disney had previously said that creator-led videos would eventually appear in the feed, and the TikTok agreement identifies one source for that material.

If Disney selects a TikTok creator’s video for Verts, it could reach people outside TikTok while directing attention back to the related Disney+ title. The partnership would also be the first time TikTok videos appear on another streaming service through this type of agreement.

Disney Has Not Released Creator Rules or Rights Details

Several practical details are still unknown. Disney and TikTok have not disclosed how creators will be selected, what specific editing permissions they will receive, or whether creators can monetize videos that use Disney assets.

Questions also remain around:

  • Approval and moderation processes
  • Music rights
  • Actor likenesses
  • The extent to which creators can alter original material
  • The specific films, shows, and characters included

Those rules will shape what the program looks like in practice. Official access to approved scenes and characters is different from unrestricted permission to remake or rewrite a Disney franchise.

TikTok’s Role in Film and TV Discovery

TikTok users shared an average of 6.5 million film- and TV-related posts each day last year. Nearly half of surveyed viewers also watched something after discovering it on the platform.

Disney already benefits from the attention created by fan culture around its movies and shows. This agreement gives the company a structured way to authorize certain creator videos, share selected content through Disney+, and use TikTok’s remix-driven format to promote its franchises.

For creators, the program may create a new route from a TikTok video to Disney’s own streaming platform. A Marvel remix, Pixar joke, or Star Wars edit could be considered for inclusion in Verts, where viewers can move from a short video to the full title on Disney+.
