Unlimited Text Conversations for Free ChatGPT Accounts

ChatGPT free accounts can now continue text conversations without hitting a usage cap. OpenAI has also changed the default model for free users to GPT-5.6 Luna.

The update changes how free-tier users access ChatGPT for text-based interactions. While media uploads still have standard limits, text chats no longer carry a usage restriction.

Free users can also use a new Think button. This option moves a conversation into a thinking mode for questions that require deeper reasoning and knowledge searching.

What GPT-5.6 Luna Offers Free Users

GPT-5.6 Luna is now the default conversation model for ChatGPT’s free tier. Under the GPT-5.6 naming system, Luna is equivalent to the earlier “nano” model series.

The model includes:

  • A context window of 1,050,000 tokens
  • A knowledge cutoff of February 16, 2026
  • Reasoning support
  • Text and media input support

GPT-5.6 Luna is multimodal, meaning it can accept both text and media inputs. It does not currently support audio or video.

Media Upload Limits Still Apply

Unlimited use applies to text interactions, not every type of ChatGPT activity. Free accounts can continue to face the existing limits for uploading media assets.

That means a user can keep chatting by text without a usage cap, while image or other media uploads remain subject to standard free-account restrictions.

GPT-5.6 Sol Updates for ChatGPT Plus and Pro

OpenAI is also updating GPT-5.6 Sol for paid ChatGPT accounts, including Plus and Pro subscriptions.

GPT-5.6 Sol is the frontier model in the GPT-5.6 lineup. It sits above both Luna and Terra. According to OpenAI, the upgraded model is designed to provide more focused responses, adjust its level of detail based on the question, and avoid formatting that is not needed.

The company also says GPT-5.6 Sol can offer a useful correction when simple agreement would not be helpful.

OpenAI’s Claims About GPT-5.6 Sol Accuracy

OpenAI says the updated GPT-5.6 Sol produces stronger and more affirmative responses with fewer factual errors. Based on the company’s internal testing, its error rate was lower by a 68% margin.

These changes apply alongside the free-tier update that brings unrestricted text chats and GPT-5.6 Luna to non-paying ChatGPT users.
