Pixel owners running Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 can now lock individual apps with a built-in system feature. Hand someone your phone to share a meme or photo, and they can no longer swipe straight into your messages or other private apps.
How to Lock an App
Long-press any app icon on your home screen or app drawer. In the Actions menu that appears, you’ll see App Lock listed with the usual options like App info, Pause app, and Widgets. Tap App Lock, and the system prompts for your fingerprint or PIN through the standard authentication sheet. Once confirmed, the app stays locked until you unlock it the same way.
What Changes Once an App Is Locked
Google goes beyond a simple PIN prompt. Notification content from the locked app gets hidden, so sensitive previews stay off your lock screen. Widgets and shortcuts tied to that app also vanish, cutting off quick access routes.
One exception applies. AI agents or services you’ve already authorized for that app keep their access. The lock targets casual snooping, not the assistants you chose to trust.
Managing Your Locked Apps
Open Settings, go to Security & privacy, then App lock. From that screen you can add new apps or unlock ones you no longer need protected. Changes take effect right away.
When the Feature Arrives
Android 17 QPR2 is expected to reach Pixel devices in December. Once it lands, the App Lock option becomes available system-wide without extra downloads.
