Microsoft has pushed another round of console features to members of the Xbox Insider program, covering four areas that tend to matter most in day-to-day use: Remote Play quality, downloads during cloud gaming sessions, personalization, and party chat. Xbox Series X and Series S owners are the main audience for the changes.
Remote Play now goes up to 1440p
Series X and Series S owners in the Alpha Skip-Ahead and Alpha Insider rings can test Remote Play at resolutions up to 1440p. Microsoft has raised video bitrates alongside the resolution bump, which should translate into a sharper picture — assuming you're playing on a device that supports it and your connection is fast enough to keep up.
Downloads keep running during cloud gaming
Insiders could already start streaming a game while it downloaded or updated in the background. The catch was that the download itself stalled once the cloud session began. That's changing: downloads can now continue in the background while you stream through Xbox Cloud Gaming, provided network conditions allow for it. Series X and Series S consoles are expected to benefit the most from the change.
More ways to personalize the console
The customization additions are small but noticeable:
- Startup animations. You can now pick which animation plays when the console boots, including options pulled from earlier Xbox generations.
- Badges on your profile. Profiles can show up to five earned badges, and you can hide individual ones from public view.
- Local search. A new search tool makes it easier to find a specific game or achievement inside a long list, instead of scrolling for it.
Voice Clarity for party chat
Voice Clarity cuts down everyday background noise while you're in party chat. It works with most games released since 2020. Microsoft is also testing changes under the hood aimed at making parties more reliable and more secure, though those aren't things players will see directly.
The bigger picture at Xbox
These updates land during a broader push at Xbox under Asha Sharma's leadership to get back into the console race. The company recently gave physical game discs a digital future — notable timing, given that PlayStation is preparing to step away from physical media starting in 2028. Xbox also picked up Hideo Kojima's PHYSINT after Sony walked away from the project.
Availability
Everything here is currently limited to Xbox Insiders. Microsoft hasn't said when all of these features will roll out to the wider Xbox user base.
