Microsoft has released its Disc to Digital feature for all Xbox players after several weeks of Xbox Insider testing. The program gives supported physical Xbox games a digital entitlement, letting players use eligible titles more like digital purchases on current and next-generation Xbox consoles.
To use the feature, insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc into an Xbox console with a disc drive. From there, claim the game’s digital license. Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs are supported, and the selection includes thousands of games as Microsoft continues to add titles.
How Xbox Disc to Digital Works
When a compatible disc is inserted, the game menu should show a Claim digital license option. In some cases, launching an eligible game can claim the entitlement automatically.
The physical disc remains part of the process. Xbox players should keep it even after claiming the digital entitlement, because compatible copies can still be lent or resold. The license is connected to the individual disc rather than permanently locked to one account.
That also means the disc should not be discarded. If the disc is sold or lost, another account may be able to claim the entitlement for that same copy, which could result in the original player losing access.
Digital Xbox Features Available for Supported Games
Supported games can receive the usual features attached to eligible digital Xbox purchases. These may include:
- Xbox Play Anywhere, where available
- Xbox Cloud Gaming, where available
- Access across supported Xbox hardware
- Potential access on PC, handhelds, or cloud-enabled devices without purchasing the game again
A game originally purchased for an Xbox console may therefore be available beyond that console, provided the game is eligible for the relevant Xbox services.
Physical Xbox Discs Still Work as Before
Disc to Digital does not replace the normal use of physical Xbox games. Microsoft says physical discs will continue functioning as they always have.
The feature is designed to add a digital entitlement to supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs, not to make the physical copy irrelevant. Keeping the disc matters, particularly for owners who may want to lend, resell, or maintain access to a compatible game.
Which Xbox Games Are Eligible?
Most physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X games can be used with Disc to Digital. A community-maintained list includes at least 1,400 compatible games, though Microsoft is continuing to expand participation.
Not every Xbox disc is included. The program currently does not cover:
- Original Xbox game discs
- Xbox 360 game discs
- Games from publishers that choose not to participate
Publisher support also varies. Sega and Ubisoft have joined the rollout, while Square Enix has not joined at this point.
What Disc to Digital Means for Xbox Game Libraries
Xbox has spent years building services around Play Anywhere, cloud gaming, handheld devices, and digital game libraries. Disc to Digital gives supported physical Xbox game collections a way to connect with those services while preserving the role of the disc.
Questions remain about whether future Xbox hardware will include a disc drive. For now, the new feature gives many Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc owners another option for using compatible games across supported devices.
