Valve has publicly updated the Steam pages for Lepton and FEX, two compatibility tools expected to support gaming on the upcoming Steam Frame VR headset. The device uses an Arm-based processor, yet Valve’s software stack is designed to support both PC and Android games.

Lepton and FEX do not currently have public Steam store pages. Their update histories are visible through SteamDB’s archive, though, giving the public a closer look at two components expected to sit at the center of Steam Frame game compatibility.

How Lepton Could Bring Android Games to Steam Frame

Lepton is expected to function as an Android compatibility layer for Linux. The project first appeared online in 2025, pointing to another major Valve effort around software compatibility.

The tool is expected to use Waydroid, a container-based system that runs Android apps on a full Linux distribution. For Steam Frame, that means Lepton could handle Android games within its own container-based environment rather than treating Android support as a separate operating system.

Steam Frame is built around SteamOS, which is based on the Arch Linux distribution. Valve is also known to provide financial support to the Arch project. That Linux foundation is part of the setup behind Lepton’s expected role on the headset.

What FEX Does for Arm-Based Steam Frame Hardware

FEX is an emulator built to translate API calls and recompile code from x86 applications into native implementations for the Arm64 instruction set architecture.

That translation layer matters because Steam Frame uses a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Arm64 system-on-chip. Many PC games and applications were created for x86 hardware, so they cannot simply run natively on an Arm-based device without compatibility work.

FEX is designed to reduce the overhead associated with emulation and improve performance. It can already provide broad compatibility with 32-bit and 64-bit x86 binary applications, including games.

The emulator had previously been presented as a tool that could work alongside Wine and Proton to run Windows games on Arm devices. Valve’s involvement could give the project more attention, much as Proton became a major software product in Linux gaming.

Steam Frame Compatibility: Lepton, FEX, and Proton

Steam Frame’s planned compatibility setup relies on three separate tools with different jobs:

  • Lepton is expected to handle Android games through its container-based system.
  • FEX is designed to translate x86-64 native code for Arm hardware.
  • Proton is expected to run Windows-based software on the Arm architecture.

Proton already acts as a compatibility layer for Windows games on Linux through Wine. Lepton and FEX expand that concept in different directions: one for Android applications and one for x86 software running on Arm64 hardware.

Together, these tools are expected to handle game compatibility across the Steam Frame ecosystem. The approach would allow Valve to address Android games, x86 applications, and Windows-based software through distinct layers rather than relying on a single compatibility solution.

Steam Frame Software Stack Moves Into Public View

Valve’s public updates for Lepton and FEX put two major pieces of the Steam Frame software stack in view. The headset is still described as upcoming, and its release date had previously been delayed because of a memory shortage crisis tied to AI data center overprovisioning.

With Lepton and FEX now appearing publicly through their Steam update histories, the Steam Frame launch appears closer than it did when those tools remained less visible. Valve has not provided public store pages for either compatibility tool, but their expected roles in the headset’s gaming setup are becoming clearer.
