What PlayStation Confirmed About FSR Redstone Frame Generation
“An Equivalent Library” Is Planned for PlayStation Platforms
Mark Cerny, Lead System Architect at PlayStation across the last two console generations, confirmed to Digital Foundry that Sony co-engineered the technology behind FSR Redstone Frame Generation as part of the Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD. According to Cerny, an equivalent frame generation library “should be seen at some point” on PlayStation platforms.
Timing: Not in 2026, Possibly 2027 at the Earliest
While the timeline remains non-specific, Cerny stated there are no more releases planned for this year. That note effectively suggests frame generation won’t arrive on PlayStation consoles before 2027 at the earliest.
The AMD Collaboration: Project Amethyst and “Co-Engineered Technology”
Sony and AMD Co-Engineered the Underlying Tech
Cerny framed the work as co-developed and co-engineered, aligning with phrasing attributed to Jack Huynh (“co-engineered technology”). He also said he’s “very happy” with how the frame generation work is progressing and indicated he expects to discuss it further in the future.
Clear Naming to Avoid Confusion
In clarifying the collaboration details, Cerny emphasized he was using updated names “to avoid confusion,” specifically noting he would use the new naming rather than “FSR4.”
PSSR 2.0 and FSR Redstone Upscaling: The Algorithm Connection
PSSR 2.0 Uses the Same Core Co-Developed Algorithm as Redstone Upscaling
Cerny clarified that PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution 2.0 (PSSR 2.0), released earlier this week on PlayStation 5 Pro systems, uses the same core co-developed algorithm as FSR Redstone’s Upscaling feature.
How This Fits Together: Upscaling Now, Frame Generation Later
The update positions PSSR 2.0 as already leveraging the shared algorithmic foundation tied to Redstone Upscaling, while the “equivalent” frame generation library is still something PlayStation expects to deliver later—just not this year.
Existing Frame Generation on PlayStation 5 vs. the “Official” Redstone Version
Games That Already Implemented AMD FSR 3 Frame Generation on PS5
The following games have already implemented AMD FSR 3 Frame Generation on PlayStation 5:
- Immortals of Aveum (Ascendant Studios)
- The First Descendant (NEXON)
Why the Upcoming Version Is Expected to Be More Advanced
The upcoming official approach is described as “much more advanced,” specifically due to significant machine-learning-based improvements introduced with FSR Redstone. Those improvements are described as including significantly reduced artifacts and ghosting.
