Nvidia has updated DLSS 5 with a smaller, faster AI model that is set to arrive in Hogwarts Legacy. The company says the latest version delivers twice the performance of the DLSS 5 model introduced in March while lowering its memory demands.
DLSS 5 uses 3D-Guided Neural Rendering to change lighting, materials, and character detail in supported games. The update also expands the technology’s rollout to more titles and platforms, including Hogwarts Legacy, Where Winds Meet, RTX Remix, and RTX Spark laptops.
What Nvidia Changed in DLSS 5
The updated DLSS 5 neural network has been reduced by 24%, bringing it to about 118 million parameters. Nvidia attributes the claimed 2X performance improvement to this smaller model.
The reduced model size also lowers 4K VRAM use by 20%. That means DLSS 5 requires less graphics memory while aiming to provide higher frame rates in compatible games.
NBA 2K27 is already using the technology. Since its September debut, 4K performance in that game has increased by more than 30%.
Still, a model that runs twice as fast does not mean every DLSS 5 game will automatically achieve double its previous frame rate. Performance will vary by game and its implementation.
DLSS 5 Comes to Hogwarts Legacy on November 5
Hogwarts Legacy is scheduled to receive official DLSS 5 support on November 5.
Early versions of the technology drew criticism for changing character faces in noticeable ways. In Hogwarts Legacy, the original DLSS 5 presentation made the teenage protagonist appear older, which some fans found jarring.
New comparison images show more restrained visual changes. The revised look is closer to the approach already seen in NBA 2K27.
Nvidia says game developers keep full creative control over how DLSS 5 changes visuals in their titles. Support for RTX 40 series hardware is still planned for a future update.
More Games and DLSS 5 Updates
Following Hogwarts Legacy, Where Winds Meet is expected to receive DLSS 5 support later in November.
Nvidia will also make the updated model the default option in future DLSS 5 games. Other scheduled updates include:
- RTX Spark laptops become widely available on October 16.
- RTX Remix receives an update on October 23.
- Where Winds Meet is next in line for DLSS 5 support later in November.
RTX Remix is Nvidia’s platform for modding classic games, and the forthcoming update will bring DLSS 5 to that platform.
Frame Generation Performance Mode for RTX 40 and RTX 50 GPUs
Nvidia has also added a Frame Generation Performance Mode to the NVIDIA app beta. It is available for RTX 40 and RTX 50 Series GPUs.
The mode uses a lighter algorithm to raise frame rates across supported Frame Generation technologies. Nvidia claims performance gains of up to 35% on an RTX 5060.
There can be a trade-off, though. Users may notice minor reductions in image quality when using the new performance mode.
DLSS 5 Memory and Performance Claims
The new DLSS 5 model is designed to reduce the computing demands associated with AI-driven graphics changes. According to Nvidia, the update provides:
- A neural network that is 24% smaller
- Roughly 118 million parameters
- 20% lower 4K VRAM use
- Up to twice the model performance compared with the March version
- More than 30% higher 4K performance in NBA 2K27 since September
These figures describe Nvidia’s updated technology and supported implementations. They do not mean that every game will show the same frame-rate gains.
