Discord is testing a Game Mode that trims the desktop app’s demands when a game is running. The idea is simple: cut background load so more of your PC’s CPU and GPU stay available for the game itself.
A screenshot from Discord Previews shows an “Enable Game Mode” toggle. With it on, the app would reduce animations and turn off effects during gameplay. Discord confirmed the feature is an early experiment in a post on X. The company plans to start rolling it out the following week and wants to add more resource-saving options later.
For anyone who leaves Discord open while gaming, the point is clear. The chat app’s visual extras don’t need to fight the game for processing power.
How Game Mode Is Expected to Work
The toggle is built to lower Discord’s CPU and GPU use. Once switched on, it would detect a running game and apply the changes on its own.
That removes the need to tweak individual visual settings before every session. Players also wouldn’t have to permanently strip out Discord’s flourishes just to keep the app lighter during games.
Which exact animations and effects get disabled is still unknown. Without those details, it’s hard to picture how different the app would look with the setting active.
Who Could Benefit Most
Players on older or lower-end PCs have the most obvious reason to try it. When a machine has little spare processing power, reducing what a background app uses is a practical first step.
No numbers exist yet on how much Game Mode would actually save. A lower resource draw from Discord doesn’t guarantee a visible frame-rate boost. Whether the game itself runs better still needs real testing.
When the Feature Might Appear
Discord said the experiment would begin rolling out the week after its September 28 confirmation. The company has not said who receives it first or how broad the initial release will be.
Players can watch for the toggle next week. A rollout starting does not mean every account gets access right away.
