Should You Wait for Nova Lake?
Nova Lake is a genuine generational leap. Branded Core Ultra 400, it is Intel's first consumer chip on the 18A process, built around Coyote Cove P-cores and Arctic Wolf E-cores. Crucially for gamers, it introduces Big Last Level Cache — Intel's answer to the 3D V-Cache that keeps Ryzen on top of gaming charts.
Now the catch. Nova Lake moves to a new LGA1954 socket. Nothing you buy today carries forward. And "late 2026" is an announcement, not a shipping date. Leaked schedules place the first 28-core desktop parts in early 2027 and the 52-core flagship as late as September 2027.
If you need a computer in 2026, buy in 2026. Waiting eighteen months for first-generation silicon on an untested socket is a plan, not a purchase.
Intel CPU Buying Guide
Socket and platform cost. LGA1851 requires DDR5. LGA1700 is discontinued but takes cheaper DDR4 and much cheaper boards. Price the full combination, because a $100 CPU saving vanishes into a $200 motherboard.
P-cores versus E-cores. Games use P-cores almost exclusively. Eight is plenty. E-cores earn their keep in rendering, encoding, and compilation.
Cooling. Core Ultra 5 chips are happy on good air cooling. The 285K and Core i9 parts need a 280mm or 360mm liquid cooler to hold boost clocks.
Memory prices. The Arrow Lake Refresh launched into severe RAM price inflation. Check DDR5 kit prices before committing to LGA1851.
Which Intel Processor Should You Buy?
Most people building new should take the Core Ultra 5 250K Plus. Enthusiasts should take the Core Ultra 7 270K Plus. Creators should watch the 285K for a dip near $450. Budget gamers should take the Core Ultra 5 225F. Already own an LGA1700 board? The Core i7-14700K or Core i5-14600K is the cheapest real upgrade going. The Core i3-12100F still owns the office-machine bracket.
