Valve expands Steam pricing tools across currencies and regions
Valve has updated Steam’s pricing tools and now gives developers three ways to convert prices across 35 currencies and four region groups using refreshed regional data.
The available options are:
- a straight exchange-rate conversion
- a purchasing-power method based on public data
- a multi-variable model that combines local buying power, exchange rates, and comparable entertainment costs
How the three Steam price conversion methods work
Straight exchange-rate conversion
One option uses a direct exchange-rate conversion. This gives developers a simple way to translate prices from one market to another based on currency value alone.
Purchasing-power pricing method
Another option uses purchasing power based on public data. This approach is designed to reflect what people in different markets can actually afford, rather than relying only on exchange rates.
Multi-variable regional pricing model
The third option uses a multi-variable model. It blends local buying power, exchange rates, and comparable entertainment costs to produce pricing suggestions for regional markets.
Steam regional prices will not update automatically
The updated pricing tools do not automatically change prices on Steam.
Publishers still need to review the suggested amounts, submit any updates, and publish those new prices on the platform. That means any changes depend on publisher action rather than an automatic system-wide adjustment.
Refreshed regional data now supports 35 currencies and four region groups
The updated system applies across 35 currencies and four region groups and uses refreshed regional data.
Valve also plans to update that data over time so the pricing guidance can reflect shifts in different markets.
Early examples show differences between pricing methods
Multi-variable pricing can suggest higher amounts in some markets
Early examples show that the multi-variable method can suggest higher prices than the other methods in some markets.
This has been seen with:
- the British pound
- the euro
- Poland’s zloty
Why the updated Steam pricing guidance matters
The pricing guidance is aimed at reducing cross-country price gaps by taking local buying power into account.
Observers expect indie studios to adopt this guidance more readily than large publishers, suggesting the updated tools may have a stronger effect among smaller developers that are more likely to follow platform recommendations closely.
