Hardware Encryption and FIPS 197 Compliance

Kingston has introduced the IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 as a hardware-encrypted USB drive built around XTS-AES 256-bit encryption. The device carries FIPS 197 certification and aligns with compliance requirements often associated with government procurement standards.

Digitally signed firmware is included to reduce exposure to BadUSB-related threats. Kingston positions the drive as part of its broader IronKey lineup, which uses XTS-AES 256-bit hardware encryption as a baseline.

Security Features Beyond Firmware Protection

Brute Force Password Protection

The drive supports safeguards against brute force password attempts designed to block repeated unauthorized login efforts. These protections add another layer beyond firmware security.

Password Modes for Flexibility and Strength

The IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 offers multiple password modes that support both complex strings and longer passphrases. That includes structured character combinations as well as sentence-style passwords or even lyrics.

This approach is meant to balance memorability with strength, though the outcome still depends on how users create and manage their passwords.

Admin Credential Reset Option

Administrators can reset user credentials, giving organizations a recovery path when access is lost. At the same time, that added oversight may not fit every use case.

Visible Password Toggle to Reduce Typing Errors

A visible password toggle lets users confirm what they’ve typed during authentication. The idea is simple but useful: it can help reduce input mistakes when entering a password.

Virtual Keyboard and Keylogger Risk Reduction

The device also includes a virtual keyboard intended to limit exposure to keyloggers and screen capture tools. Even so, those protections are not presented as immune to more advanced attack methods.

Anti-Fingerprint Coating and Physical Design

An anti-fingerprint coating is part of the design, appearing to focus more on physical durability than on a measurable improvement in security.

Performance, Capacity, and USB Interface

The IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 uses a USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface. It delivers read speeds of up to 145 MB/s and write speeds of up to 115 MB/s, placing it within the expected range for encrypted flash storage.

Capacity options range from 32 GB to 256 GB, giving users several choices depending on storage needs.

Size, Weight, and Operating Conditions

The enclosure combines metal and plastic materials in a compact 60.56 mm frame and weighs under 23 grams. The device operates within standard environmental tolerances, including temperatures from 0°C to 50°C during use.

Compatibility and Setup Requirements

The drive remains compatible with Windows 11 and macOS systems without requiring additional software installation. Kingston describes the setup process as straightforward, although the need for consecutive drive letters may create minor limitations in some system configurations.
