HBO usually loves to keep its cards close. So it's a bit of a shock that the final trailer for House of the Dragon season 3 just laid one of its biggest moments right out in the open. The outcome of the Battle of the Gullet, the massive naval clash that kicks off the season, is now basically common knowledge. Rhaenyra Targaryen wins, and she takes King's Landing.

For anyone who's read George R.R. Martin's Fire and Blood, this was always going to happen. But for everyone watching fresh, it's a bittersweet reveal they probably would have rather seen unfold on screen. Then again, the closing moments of season 2 made this turn just about unavoidable anyway.

The Battle of the Gullet Could Be the Biggest Spectacle Westeros Has Ever Seen

The trailer opens on a field littered with bodies. Daemon Targaryen, played by Matt Smith, smashes enemies into the mud while dragons rain fire down on a fleet below. Then the chaos of the battle cuts to Rhaenyra standing in a conquered King's Landing, vowing to secure the city without spilling more blood.

Showrunner Ryan Condal has called the season opener arguably the craziest episode of television ever made. The battle pits Corlys Velaryon and his fleet against Tyland Lannister's forces and the Triarchy, shaping up to be one of the bloodiest naval engagements in Westerosi history.

Taking the Iron Throne Is Easy Compared to Holding It

Here's the thing the trailer makes clear: claiming the throne is already turning into Rhaenyra's undoing. Alicent Hightower, played by Olivia Cooke, gets the sharpest line of the whole trailer when she warns that the crown is a weight that crushes. And she's not wrong. Rhaenyra is hemmed in by plots from Team Green, who are running smear campaigns through the city streets to chip away at her authority.

Even her own council isn't safe. Loyalties are shifting in ways she can't see yet. The trailer hints at disagreements, divided allegiances, and the kind of quiet betrayal that tends to cut deeper than any blade.

Aemond and Vhagar Still Loom Large

Aemond Targaryen, still riding the terrifying dragon Vhagar, remains a deadly threat. Meanwhile, Rhaenyra seems convinced that getting Aegon II out of the picture will rally the kingdom behind her. What she doesn't seem to register is the resentment building among the ordinary people living under her rule.

Alicent Makes Her Own Moves

Alicent isn't sitting still either. She appears to be maneuvering on her own, including one moment where she turns to a visibly shaken Rhaenyra and asks, "Did I not warn you that you would come to this?"

Emma D'Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra, has said the character is finally stepping into a more active, front-footed role this season after spending two seasons backed into corners. But the trailer suggests that moving forward comes at a brutal price.

If season 2 tested your patience, season 3 looks ready to make up for every slow burn. House of the Dragon returns on HBO and Max on June 21.
