Free AI Video Generation in Google Vids
Google has rolled out a broad set of updates to Google Vids, its Workspace-integrated video creation tool. The biggest change is the addition of Veo 3.1, described as the company’s most advanced AI video generation model, alongside Lyria 3 for AI-composed music.
These updates bring professional-grade AI video and audio creation to all users, including people using free accounts, with no extra charge. That shift matters because it moves advanced creative features directly into a tool already tied to Workspace, rather than leaving them in separate, standalone apps.
Veo 3.1 Video Creation Limits for Free and Paid Users
Under the new setup, users with a free Google Account can generate up to 10 video clips per month. Each clip can be as long as eight seconds. Google Vids supports both prompt-to-video and photo-to-video generation, giving users two ways to create short AI-generated clips inside the platform.
Subscribers on Google AI Ultra and Workspace AI Ultra plans get a much higher monthly allowance, with up to 1,000 Veo generations each month. The difference in limits clearly separates casual access from heavier professional or enterprise use, while still making the core capability available to everyone.
Built-In AI Music With Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro
Google also expanded audio creation inside Vids. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can compose original music tracks using Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro directly within the product.
The music creation tools support outputs ranging from 30-second clips to three-minute compositions. That means users can work on short background pieces as well as longer tracks without leaving the same environment they use for video creation. In practical terms, Google is folding creative tools that once required separate software into a productivity suite already used by millions of businesses.
Custom AI Avatars in Google Vids
Another major addition is the introduction of custom and directable AI avatars. Users can generate these avatars from text prompts, then adjust key visual elements such as appearance, clothing, and background.
Directable Avatars for Scene-Based Video Creation
Once created, avatars can be placed into scenes where they interact with uploaded objects, including products or equipment. Google says the avatar voice and identity remain consistent across frames, which is important for videos that need continuity from scene to scene.
This makes the feature more than a simple animated presenter. It gives users a way to build scenes with a recognizable virtual character that can appear repeatedly while maintaining a stable look and voice.
Language Support for AI Avatars
The avatar feature supports eight languages, including English, French, German, and Japanese. That broader language support makes the tool more flexible for teams and users working across different regions and communication needs.
Direct YouTube Publishing and Screen Recording
Google Vids now includes a direct-to-YouTube publishing feature. Instead of downloading a finished video and uploading it manually, users can publish straight from Vids.
Private-by-Default YouTube Exports
All exports are set to private by default for review. That approach adds a review step before public release, which is especially useful for teams that need to check content before it goes live.
Chrome Extension for Screen Capture
Google also introduced a companion Chrome extension called Google Vids Screen Recorder. This adds browser-based screen capture, extending the platform beyond generated clips and avatars into recorded visual content that can be used alongside other elements in a video project.
Why the Google Vids Update Stands Out
The timing of these updates is notable. They arrive just days after Google launched Veo 3.1 Lite, a lower-cost model for developers available through the Gemini API. Veo 3.1 Lite is priced at less than half the cost of Veo 3.1 Fast. Google also announced a price reduction for Veo 3.1 Fast beginning April 7.
Google’s Broader Push Into AI Video Generation
Taken together, these moves show a deeper commitment to video generation across Google’s product lineup. On one side, the company is lowering costs for developers using Veo models through the API. On the other, it is placing advanced video creation directly inside Workspace through Google Vids.
That combination widens access across both developer and business audiences. It also strengthens Google’s position in AI video by tying model improvements to practical, built-in tools people can use inside an existing workflow.
Competitive Position Against Other Platforms
The broader market context also makes the rollout more significant. The changes come shortly after OpenAI shut down its competing Sora video generation tool. That leaves Google as one of the few major players offering broadly accessible AI video generation embedded inside an enterprise productivity platform.
Microsoft 365, identified as Google’s primary enterprise rival, does not yet offer comparable native video generation capabilities within its suite. So this update is not just a feature expansion. It also helps Google differentiate Workspace by making video generation, AI music, avatars, publishing, and screen capture part of a connected workflow.
What Users Can Do Inside Google Vids Now
Google Vids now brings several creative functions into one Workspace-linked environment:
- Generate short AI video clips from prompts
- Turn photos into AI-generated video clips
- Create original music inside Vids
- Build and customize AI avatars
- Place avatars into scenes with uploaded objects
- Publish videos directly to YouTube
- Capture screens through a browser-based extension
What stands out here is the consolidation. Video generation, music creation, avatars, publishing, and screen recording now sit closer together in a single tool, reducing the need to move between separate products for basic production tasks.
Google Vids Access Tiers and Feature Availability
Feature availability depends on the account type.
Free Google Account Features
Free Google Account holders can use Veo 3.1 to generate up to 10 video clips per month, with a maximum clip length of eight seconds. Both prompt-to-video and photo-to-video are included.
Paid Subscriber Features
Google AI Ultra and Workspace AI Ultra subscribers receive up to 1,000 Veo generations per month. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can also create original music with Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro inside Vids.
This tiered structure gives free users a meaningful entry point while reserving higher-volume use and some advanced audio tools for paid plans.
