Claude can now use a computer in the background through Claude Cowork and Claude Code. Instead of taking over the display, it works in a separate background window, where it can click, type, and open apps while you continue using your computer.
The feature is designed to let Claude handle a desktop task while you browse, write, code, or work on something else.
How Claude Works in the Background
Claude runs separately from your active screen rather than controlling your display directly. It does not take control of your mouse or keyboard in the middle of your work, and it waits when you are typing.
If a task requires the full screen, Claude asks for permission before interrupting. That permission is requested once per session.
This approach allows Claude to continue working on an assigned task while you stay focused on another activity.
How Claude Chooses a Tool for a Task
Claude does not begin by navigating the computer screen. It first checks whether a connector can complete the task.
Available connectors include:
- Gmail
- Google Drive
- Slack
When a connector can handle the work, Claude uses that route. If a connector is not available, Claude next tries a browser. This can be the browser built into Claude Desktop or Chrome through Claude in Chrome.
Direct computer navigation is the fallback option. Claude uses it when neither connectors nor browser access can complete the task, such as when work involves an internal dashboard or a specialized workplace tool without a connector.
Tasks You Can Hand Off to Claude
Claude can take on background tasks that involve local files, connected tools, browsers, and desktop applications.
For example, it can pull together a competitive analysis from local files and connected tools, then format that material into a report. It can also open a phone simulator, explore an app under development, and flag UX issues.
Because the work happens in the background, Claude can continue with a task that depends on a physical computer after you step away from your desk, as long as the computer remains on.
Claude Computer Use Availability
Computer use is currently in beta for Pro and Max plans. It is available through Cowork and Claude Code on both macOS and Windows.
To enable it, go to:
Settings → General → Computer use
Before enabling the feature, review the available guidance for using Cowork safely on your desktop.
