Audio-Technica’s ATH-AWX7000 is a flagship closed-back headphone priced at $3,799. The company calls it its finest headphone to date, pairing a newly developed 58mm driver with hand-finished Japanese woodwork.

The design centers on Kiso cypress earcups, Echizen lacquer, a magnesium frame, and Japanese deerskin details. It is a fully wired headphone with no Bluetooth or active noise cancellation.

Hand-Finished Kiso Cypress and Echizen Lacquer

The ATH-AWX7000 earcups are made from Kiso cypress, a wood historically used for Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. Each housing receives a hand-applied traditional Echizen lacquer finish that brings out the wood grain and is expected to darken over time.

Audio-Technica finishes the frame and sliders in deep navy kachi-iro, a shade traditionally associated with samurai. The combination gives the headphones a distinctly crafted appearance rather than a conventional all-metal or plastic design.

New Hybrid Matrix Diaphragm Driver Technology

At the center of the ATH-AWX7000 is a 58mm driver using Audio-Technica’s Hybrid Matrix Diaphragm, or HMD, technology. This is the first Audio-Technica headphone to use the new design.

Instead of using a diaphragm made from one material, the HMD combines polymer film with a metal dome. According to Audio-Technica, the construction is intended to help the diaphragm retain its shape under the higher air pressure created inside closed-back earcups.

The driver also uses the company’s HXDT molding process, previously used on the ATH-ADX7000. Audio-Technica says this process is designed to help the diaphragm move more uniformly.

Audio-Technica’s Sound Claims for the ATH-AWX7000

Audio-Technica says the ATH-AWX7000’s driver design is intended to provide stronger, cleaner bass, improved dynamics, and a wider soundstage. The company describes the sound as warm and lush.

Those are manufacturer descriptions, so the headphones’ sound will ultimately need to be heard rather than accepted at face value. Still, the combination of a closed-back design, a 58mm driver, and the new diaphragm construction is central to how Audio-Technica positions this model.

Wired Connections and Included Cables

The ATH-AWX7000 is built as a wired audiophile headphone. It does not include Bluetooth connectivity or active noise cancellation.

Audio-Technica includes two detachable eight-braid cables, both using the company’s A2DC connectors:

  • A 2.5-meter balanced cable with a four-pin XLR connector
  • A 3-meter unbalanced cable with a 6.3mm plug

This cable selection supports balanced and unbalanced wired connections without requiring the buyer to purchase those two cable types separately.

Construction, Weight, and Carrying Case

The headphone uses a magnesium frame and aluminum sliders. Audio-Technica lists its weight at about 353 grams.

Japanese deerskin covers both the headband and earpads. Every ATH-AWX7000 is manufactured in Tokyo and includes a hard carrying case.

ATH-AWX7000 Price and Availability

The Audio-Technica ATH-AWX7000 is available now for $3,799.

Its price places it firmly in the flagship category. Along with the wired-only setup, hand-finished wooden earcups, detachable cable options, and new Hybrid Matrix Diaphragm technology, it is designed as a premium closed-back headphone rather than a general-purpose wireless model.
