The Moment Users Noticed Something Had Changed
It started with a missing bullet point. Sharp-eyed Claude subscribers spotted that Claude Code had quietly vanished from the features listed on the Claude Pro signup page. No announcement, no email — just gone. The kind of thing that makes you do a double-take and then immediately open Reddit to see if anyone else caught it.
People did catch it. And the reaction was exactly what you'd expect.
Anthropic's Head of Growth, Amol Avasare, eventually stepped in to explain. According to him, removing Claude Code from the feature list was "a small test on ~2% of new prosumer signups," and nothing had changed for existing Pro ($20/month) or Max ($100/month and up) subscribers. The bullet point came back. Crisis averted — or so it seemed.
What Avasare Actually Said — and Why It Matters More Than the Test
Here's the part that deserves a closer read. After walking back the immediate concern, Avasare went on to say something much more telling. He pointed out that when Claude Max first launched roughly a year ago, Claude Code wasn't part of the package, a desktop AI tool called Cowork didn't exist yet, and "agents that run for hours weren't a thing."
Then he said this: "Max was designed for heavy chat usage, that's it. Engagement per subscriber is way up. We've made small adjustments along the way (weekly caps, tighter limits at peak), but usage has changed a lot and our current plans weren't built for this."
That last sentence — "our current plans weren't built for this" — is doing a lot of heavy lifting. It's not the kind of thing you say when everything is fine. It reads more like someone laying the groundwork for a bigger announcement, carefully. And the direction that announcement points isn't great for people who've been getting a lot of mileage out of their $20 subscription.
Why Flat-Rate AI Plans Are Under Pressure Everywhere
What's happening at Anthropic isn't an isolated pricing hiccup. It's part of a broader reckoning across the AI industry with a simple math problem: flat-rate subscriptions were designed with a certain kind of usage in mind — mostly text conversations, maybe some image generation. They were not designed for agentic AI tools that can run autonomously for hours, spinning through thousands of tokens, executing tasks, writing code, and interacting with other systems.
The costs of that kind of usage are dramatically higher. And when you're charging everyone the same flat monthly rate regardless of whether they chat casually for twenty minutes or run Claude Code agents all day long, the economics start to crack.
GitHub felt it too. The platform recently suspended signups for its own flat-rate Copilot plans and pulled Claude Opus access from its $10/month tier. That's two major AI providers, in close succession, visibly struggling to make unlimited-style plans work in an era of AI agents and autonomous coding tools.
The Bait-and-Switch Problem — and What Fairness Would Look Like
There's a real grievance buried in all of this, and it's worth saying plainly. People signed up for Claude Pro or Claude Max with a specific set of features advertised. Some of them likely upgraded — or chose Anthropic over a competitor — specifically because Claude Code was included. If that feature disappears, or gets moved behind a higher paywall, that's a legitimate grievance.
If Anthropic does eventually strip Claude Code from its lower-tier plans, the decent thing — the fair thing — would be to let existing subscribers keep their current functionality, or at minimum, offer refunds to annual subscribers who no longer want what they're paying for. Whether that happens remains to be seen.
OpenAI Is Already Watching
You'd expect a competitor to notice an opening like this. Sure enough, when Avasare's comments started circulating, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman replied with a simple "ok boomer" — a low-key trolling move, but one that signals something real. OpenAI, with its own coding tool Codex, would be more than happy to absorb any Claude users who feel burned by changes to Anthropic's plans.
The competitive pressure here is pointed. If Anthropic narrows what's included in Claude Pro, it creates an immediate recruiting opportunity for OpenAI and others. That's the uncomfortable corner Anthropic now finds itself in: continuing to offer agentic AI features at flat-rate prices may not be financially sustainable, but pulling them risks handing users — and headlines — to the competition.
