Rockstar Games aired a nearly 30-minute gameplay showcase for Grand Theft Auto VI on Netflix last week before posting it to YouTube. The footage, recorded entirely on PlayStation 5, displayed the reimagined Vice City, dual protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, and several new systems. The game launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
The Netflix premiere produced a clear spike in activity. U.S. app downloads rose 24% from the prior day, according to Sensor Tower, while iOS downloads climbed 54%. The Netflix app moved from 96th to 35th on the App Store free apps chart. Pre-orders for GTA VI jumped 436% that same day. PlayStation pre-orders rose 606% and Xbox pre-orders rose 127%. Sensor Tower had already recorded 4.55 million pre-orders before the special aired.
Dedicated NPC Team and Scale of the World
Rockstar North co-head Aaron Garbut told The New York Times the studio formed an entirely new team of writers, directors, and producers focused only on non-player characters. “We art-directed each individual one of them,” Garbut said. The game contains more than 600,000 animations—more than ten times the roughly 55,000 in GTA V. He described the attention given to every space: “Every room in the game, somebody thought about this. Who’s sitting where, what they’re drinking, the marks that are left on the table.”
Fellow co-head Rob Nelson told IGN the project is so large that “I don’t know that there’s anybody on the team that knows all of it.”
No Real-Money Purchases in Single-Player, No Generative AI
During a hands-on preview at Rockstar’s Edinburgh headquarters, Nelson confirmed to Kinda Funny Games hosts Andy Cortez and Greg Miller that GTA VI’s single-player campaign includes no real-money purchases. He also stated that generative AI played no part in the game’s development. The position matches earlier remarks from Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick, who said in February that generative AI has no role in what Rockstar is building. Rockstar declined to comment on the future of GTA Online, where Shark Cards have driven monetization for more than a decade.
Wanted System, Activities, and World Details
The extended footage showed a revamped six-star wanted system. “Heat” icons track how police identify suspects by appearance, weapons, and vehicles. Players can lower their profile through disguises and vehicle swaps.
Side activities include basketball, scuba diving, dirt biking, and base jumping. A character fitness system links eating and exercise habits to in-game statistics. Snapmatic, a social media feed, lets players scroll through posts from in-game characters and contacts.
The map covers urban Vice City, suburban neighborhoods, beaches, and Everglades-inspired swamplands that players can cross by airboat.
Pre-Order Editions and Pre-Load Date
GTA VI is available for pre-order in Standard and Ultimate editions priced at $80 and $100. Pre-loading begins November 12.
