TRM Labs estimates attackers stole $6.36 billion from Binance across ten blockchains, moving most funds within 20 minutes. The incident is believed to be the largest cryptocurrency theft recorded.

## Investigation reveals multiple breaches

Binance initially traced unauthorized withdrawals to a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop that enabled access to a service container. Investigators later identified additional breaches. Binance reported no evidence of leaked wallet private keys and promised technical findings after verification.

TRM Labs attributes the attack to North Korea's TraderTraitor with high confidence. Elliptic also suspects North Korea, describing Tornado Cash funding, advance rehearsals, and previously signed transactions executed together.

## Earlier cryptocurrency thefts

The loss exceeds four times Bybit's $1.5 billion theft in February 2025. Binance previously lost 7,000 bitcoins, worth approximately $40.7 million, in May 2019 and covered that theft through its emergency fund.
